Acacia Court Aged Care Centre
This new 120-bed aged care and community hub in Adelaide’s western suburbs was designed around first-principles environmental thinking, creating light-filled, connected spaces that support resident wellbeing, outdoor access and a homelike experience across every part of the facility.
Acacia Court is organised around north-facing wings that open to landscaped courtyards and shaded verandahs, creating a calm, homelike setting supported by natural light, ventilation and passive climate performance.
Allied Health spaces and commercial tenancies reinforce the facility’s community role, while a landmark Lemon Scented Gum informed the material palette and layered façades. Inside, a mix of domestic rooms and larger communal areas supports daily living. Clear sightlines, intuitive circulation and dementia-considerate planning improve comfort and orientation.
The building form responds to climate, with long north elevations maximising winter sun and compact east–west façades reducing heat load. Integrated environmental systems ensure consistent year-round comfort.
Design approach
A strong sustainability foundation
The design is driven by first-principles environmental thinking, using north-facing skillion roofs for optimal sun access and natural ventilation to support passive temperature control. Orientation responds directly to local winds and seasonal sun, creating a stable, efficient baseline for resident comfort.
Connection to landscape and place
A landmark Lemon Scented Gum informed the material palette, screening strategy and layered façade treatments, softening edges and anchoring the building in its setting. Landscaped courtyards and sheltered verandahs offer protected outdoor spaces, while both private and communal interiors maintain strong visual connections to the surrounding gardens.
Best practice aged care design
Clear sightlines and intuitive circulation improve orientation for residents, supported by integrated dementia-friendly features embedded early in the design. Homelike spaces sit alongside essential clinical areas, creating a balanced environment with varied settings that reflect the rhythms of everyday life.
