Aberfoyle Community Centre redevelopment
A versatile community hub redevelopment designed to support local residents and their community programs.
C4 Architects redeveloped the existing community centre in Aberfoyle Park, South Australia, for a much-needed upgrade to create a central hub that would meet the needs of the local community. Designed to accommodate a wide range of uses – from youth arts to function events – the centre required a flexible and inclusive design that could cater for different mobility needs, with strong consideration of environmental best practices. The redevelopment focuses on improving accessibility, usability and community participation.
Design approach
The significant number of stakeholders in this project meant that the community centre needed to respond to a diverse range of needs. C4 Architects consulted closely with the local community and key stakeholders to refine the project brief and inform a thoughtful design for the community centre redevelopment.
The existing centre turned its back on the adjoining park and open space at the rear of the building, so the first move was to reorient the design and create a focus on the beautiful open space. This shift enabled the creation of outdoor areas for visitor greeting, along with shaded zones that support passive cooling and provide free-flowing breakout spaces for community use.
The building’s footprint was constrained by existing artwork on the site, so we collaborated with the artist to incorporate their art into the new design to great effect. The building design emphasised flexibility by creating spaces that could support multiple uses and balance the needs of different user groups in the community. Giving spaces multiple purposes also allowed for future adaptation of the building if required and efficient use of the project budget.
The community centre redevelopment has created a welcoming and inclusive space for the Aberfoyle community to gather, with an improved layout and adaptable spaces that support a wide range of activities. This project has strengthened community engagement, social connection and local events at the centre, delivering long-term value for the council in the form of a highly functional and durable community asset.
