Grange Townhouse

Design approach

The original block contained a derelict home, which was demolished to allow the site to be subdivided into two lots for two new townhouses. Each townhouse is arranged as two pavilions around a central courtyard, bringing light, ventilation and outdoor connection into the heart of the home.

For the Grange Townhouse, our client’s priorities were to maximise environmental efficiency and make the most of the neighbouring community park at the rear of the site. Designed over three levels, the home includes a below-ground cellar, a ground-floor living zone and an upper level with bedrooms, bathroom and a secondary living area suited to family life.

We carefully considered the environmental conditions of the narrow suburban site, positioned between the coast and nearby parklands. By setting the townhouse back, we were able to harness natural south-westerly breezes from the park to help cool the home in summer. Substantial north-facing glazing beside the central courtyard allows winter sun to reach the double-height living area, supporting passive warmth through the cooler months.

To further improve thermal performance, we used double glazing, a double-skin wall and minimal west-facing windows to reduce afternoon heat gain in summer and retain warmth in winter. South-west-facing windcatchers draw breezes through the home, while rooftop solar arrays support electrical energy and water heating.

Recycled materials were also used throughout, including hardwoods from shearing sheds for timber windows, doors and decking, and reclaimed bowling alley materials for benchtops. Together, these design decisions helped achieve the client’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while creating a comfortable, connected family home.
