Pirathon winery expansion
C4 Architects worked with Pirathon – an established winery in the Barossa Valley – to deliver an expansion to support the business's next stage of growth. The project doubled the usable space at the existing facility to accommodate modernised production processes, strengthen quality control, and introduce new spaces for staff and visitors at the winery.

Design approach
The expansion of the existing Pirathon winery site was designed to increase production capacity, modernise operations, strengthen quality control processes and introduce new facilities for staff and visitors. Working within tight site boundaries presented several site planning challenges, including limited areas for greywater recycling and irrigation. Our design approach responded to this by focusing on making efficient use of the available site space.
An existing ageing structure was demolished to make way for a new industrial shed, designed at double-height to accommodate staff and visitor facilities while maintaining a compact footprint. Staff and operational areas were located on the ground level, while visitor spaces sat above on the first floor.
Combining staff and visitor spaces within a stacked layout improved overall efficiency for the addition, making better use of the site’s available footprint while supporting cost-effective outcomes and creating more value within a compact space.
To modernise production, C4 again teamed up with Linnery Engineering, who provided specialist engineering input on the project. The winery equipment was internalised into a new climate-controlled space, helping to strengthen quality control for the facility.
Our design featured a viewing deck overlooking the winery as part of the visitor space, creating a unique experience for guests and an area where they could gather to enjoy the surrounding landscape and views across the site.
