A government housing project in Sydney providing affordable housing apartments for senior residents.
C4 Architects designed a series of high-quality, sustainable, medium-density apartments to provide affordable housing for senior living. The design approach focused on maximising site potential while creating liveable and sustainable homes for future residents. Through careful planning and efficient use of the site, the project exceeded the original yield targets, delivering a total of 16 apartments upon completion.
Design approach
The project brief called for a series of apartments suitable for senior living. The project focused on maximising the site yield, creating streetscape variety and appeal, and incorporating best practice environmental and community housing design principles into our final design.
The use of thin plans (also known as narrow block houses) not only allowed us to increase the number of developments on the site, but also allowed for good winter sun penetration, natural ventilation and light, airy spaces within the apartments themselves. Our architects added large balconies and used a mix of masonry and lightweight materials to enhance the overall quality and feel of the apartments.
The design incorporated a range of different materials and roof types across the development to create a more diverse and appealing streetscape. To further complement the residential surroundings, the apartment exteriors were designed to look like townhouses from the street, helping them sit comfortably within the surrounding neighbourhood.
