Wagga Wagga affordable housing apartments
C4 Architects was briefed on this government housing redevelopment to transform a single-dwelling site into four apartments with contemporary street appeal, to use as affordable housing for female senior and disabled residents.
A considered affordable housing redevelopment that transformed a single-dwelling site into a four-apartment complex.
Design approach
We designed the apartments to present as a set of two townhouses from street view, enabling us to achieve a high-end, contemporary look – part of a fresh approach for social housing models. Existing residences in the street were made up predominantly of brick, which informed our design starting point. We used a mix of lightweight materials and masonry, with careful consideration of colour contrast, and added large balconies to achieve a contemporary look while also delivering affordable, sustainable, light-filled homes.
Our design approach utilised thin plans to maximise the available space on the block and to allow maximum light, winter sun, and natural ventilation within the building. These environmental design strategies help reduce ongoing heating and cooling demands, supporting more efficient and affordable living outcomes. Ground-floor apartments were designed in line with best practice social housing design principles, providing universal accessibility and supporting the long-term needs of future residents.
By applying best-practice design principles throughout the project, we were able to deliver four apartments that offer high-end appeal and move beyond perceptions of typical social housing, while continuing to meet sustainability and affordability requirements.
