Blakes Crossing medium-density community housing
Situated in a new urban development, this community housing project needed to align with overarching design restrictions as well as follow standard requirements for flexible community housing. Set across multiple sites in the development, C4 Architects delivered six community houses that blended into their surrounds, ranging from single-dwelling to four-bedroom homes.

Design approach
Our architects liaised with the urban developer and community housing provider early on to refine the project brief and requirements, setting a smooth start to the decision-making process. From these early discussions, our architectural team created a design that met the complex set of requirements: delivering a series of six homes, ranging from a single-dwelling to a four-bedroom house, set on various sites around the housing development. The houses needed to be energy-efficient, provide off-street parking, and comply with the developer's design restrictions.
The design prioritised energy efficiency and ensured all floor plans had access to winter sun and natural light to support passive heating and cooling, minimising ongoing energy output. Each property includes its own entry and rear yard, for private open space, while reverse standard trusses were incorporated into the design to achieve raked ceilings that enhance the sense of space and bring additional natural light into the interiors.
The result is a series of light-filled homes that achieve a sense of individuality, minimise energy use and provide residents with great amenities for living.
